Good Excuse

So why haven't I blogged in a month?
For a very good, very growing reason.

Baby number two decided to let us know of its existence, coming as a complete surprise, just after Christmas! Unlike my son, this pregnancy has been absolutely plagued with sickness morning, noon, and night. I find it very hard to exist everyday, let alone blog.

But as the first trimester nears it's end, I am hoping that so too will the sickness. And then I promise to be a better blogger.

And also, YAY! Shocked we were, but we are also super super super excited and feeling very blessed right now.

Surprise!

Okay it really wasn't that much of a surprise was it!?

At 39weeks and 3days I woke up with cramps. And all day I walked around with cramps. Was I concerned? Nope. Was I excited? Nope. Why? My baby book told me contractions feel like a tight band around your belly spreading to your back. Is that how you would describe cramps? Nope!

So after an entire day of being uncomfortable I talked to my cousin (who is having her 2nd baby tomorrow!) who is a nurse, and she basically yelled at me and told me to get to the hospital. Still not convinced, I took a shower. Uh oh. Needless to say, I realized my "cramps" were contractions and we booked it to the hospital!

14hrs. later, no baby.
But I did spike a fever of 102.4

So after getting to experience 14hrs. of labor I got to experience a c-section.
And then my precious baby had to experience 8hrs of time in the NICU. (not before daddy got 99 pictures, and a quick kiss from me!)

This was not at all how I envisioned giving birth would go, but it's okay. My family came to visit and Lee was able to bring each of them down to the NICU to see our little bundle of joy. I was the last person to hold him, but it's true that you 'save the best for last' right?

Fast forward 4 days, another fever spike, and sleepless nights spent with my newest love, and we came home!

What? Pictures of feet aren't enough?
Here you go:

Rohan Alistair, 7lbs 7oz 19.5" long and completely perfect

(ps. Due to many people already getting the name wrong, it is pronounced rowin' like, "I'm rowin' a boat" and is sometimes spelled Rowan.)

Flickr Favorites - Nesting

It's true what they say.
The end of pregnancy brings on many things, including a need to clean! I have been busy sorting, stashing, dusting, arranging, you name it. With my little bursts of energy I feverishly organize some area of the house, and then promptly pop myself down on the sofa for a much deserved rest. Then get up and repeat.

The end is near folks.

Flickr Favorites - Stand Still

36 weeks 4 days
That is how pregnant I am.

I almost feel like I can't remember a time when I wasn't pregnant. It's so hard to believe that in a matter of weeks now it will all be over. That the little boy who is forever kicking away at my rib cage will be in the outside world, and that I will be his mother. Reminders are sprinkled all over the house in the form of bottles, strollers, baby hats, and blankets.

And while part of me is deathly afraid of being in charge of his little life, another part of me can not wait to begin it! I am walking around in almost constant pain of some sort, and while I've had an easier pregnancy than some women, I am ready to be done (and back to a normal diet!). If there are any baby whisperer's out there, please let my little guy know I'd like to have him a little early please. If he cooks too long he's going to present his mom with some serious challenges the doctors don't want her to face!

Finished

The nursery is finished.
I must say I am quite pleased with how it turned out. It is bright and cheerful and fit for a boy without screaming, 'I'm a boys room!' (I don't hear any screaming at least) :)

Here are some other pictures:

Rocking Chair, with blanket crocheted by yours truly.
I also have some of my prints on the wall. The deer pillow comes from Olive's Etsy shop, while the brown dog is a long dog kit from June Craft's etsy shop.

The crib adorned in a hand made quilt by my mom (owner of Pine Hill Forest). Don't you think she should offer up some of these beautiful quilts for sale? I am in love with them!

Close up of the quilt:

Now all we need is the little boy to make his appearance so we can put him in there!

Flickr Favorites - 2011

This week Mitsy of Artmind asked us to create a mosaic of what we would like 2011 to be for us.
There is only one thing on my mind these days, and that is the impending arrival of my little one.

All I want for 2011 is the safe arrival of my little baby boy, and a whole year of the memories he will bring. I have 6 teeny tiny weeks left until my due date, and I'm ready now more than ever for our lives to change forever in a way that can't even be put into words.

Busy Busy Bee

December certainly is a busy time of year.

This December has been even more busy than usual for me which, as you might have noticed, has caused a serious lack of posting on my little blog. Let me give you a run down of what's been going on:

1.) I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
Ever hear about this? I hadn't given it a single thought until I got a phone call from a nurse at my OB's office instructing me to high tail it to the hospital for an in depth test of my blood sugar. This involved fasting for 15hrs, and lots of blood work. Things didn't come back so hot and as a result my life was sort of turned upside down.

2.) As a result of GD I see twice as many doctors.
In addition to seeing my lovely OB every two weeks, I get to meet with high risk doctors every 2-4weeks to have my little boy checked on. I'm not complaining because I want him to stay healthy, but it's a lot of appointments to get to!

3.) As a result of GD I'm spending 90hours in the kitchen.
My diet is more strict than a regular diabetics diet, and I have to be very careful what I consume. I test my sugar levels four times a day, and if I am not careful I will have to also use insulin to keep the baby and I healthy. Since I do NOT want this, I have been on crusade to cook as healthy as I can for the baby and me. Dinners which were usually quick and easy have become more involved and time consuming, but worth it, because you can only eat eggs and a slice of toast for so long. I also go to the grocery store 50 more times a week to get fresh veggies for snacks and dinner.

4.) I've got about 6 weeks before I give birth.
If I went to my due date it would actually be 8 weeks, but doctors are hinting that that will not happen. This is a whole other story, but because of this I was told not to travel very far for the holidays. As a result my family is coming to me! This has meant lots and lots of cleaning and preparing for a house full of 7 people and 4 dogs set to arrive this Wednesday.

5.) I've been busy making new items for my shops!
I think this one is self explanatory :)

Did I give enough reasons for my horrible lack of posts?
I have lots of new work to share on here, and hope to do that all this week. Fingers crossed nothing crazy happens :)

Details

What an exciting day Monday, September 20th, was!
I had been getting more and more anxious for it to arrive with each passing day, resorting to drawing lines on my pretty calendar for each day I made it through. It was a constant reminder that time was indeed rolling along even when it felt like it wasn't.

The morning started with a routine visit to the transplant clinic for my husband. It was the big removing-of-staples visit, and we were there bright and early! Once all of that was finished we decided to spend some time walking around Old(e) City. I love it there. There are so many beautiful sites and sounds. Rarely do we actually have the time to just stroll through the old buildings, or down the little cobble stone streets. This was all short lived by my urgent need to eat though!

After a lovely lunch (he had a burger, I had a calamari salad) we strolled through some pretty streets on our way back to the car. The time was really getting close.

Time to finally see the baby that is.

We arrived 20minutes early, and I expected to sit and wait the eternity that was required of me. However we were both (very pleasantly) surprised when they called my name after 5 minutes (yes!). At this point the husband was looking a little pale, and I wondered if he'd make it through the exam. This was his first time "seeing" the baby and he was all kinds of nervous about that fact.

When our wonderful technician started the first thing we saw was a little head and belly. Then I thought I saw cute little hands. "Nope!" the technician told me. Confused I asked her what I was looking at then. She responded with a chuckle that it appeared my little one had it's legs up in the air with both feet hanging out by his/her face (at this point she would not tell me the sex. She explained she always did that part last. boo!). So a little perplexed but amused, I tried to tell my brain to register the little grey images as feet and not hands.

As though the baby knew I was struggling to get a good grasp on what I was seeing, I saw little hands reach out and play with those little feet! And then I saw the same little hands play with a teeny tiny little mouth. And then I saw a spine. The technician made a small comment about this being a very "active" baby and told me that s/he had flipped to facing my spine. Within a minute or two s/he was back to facing outwards towards my belly. This went on and on, and while I watched I sort of wished I could feel that twirling happening inside my belly.

The technician clicked away, taking all sorts of measurements while I sat content to watch. After 45minutes (and with feet still up by his/her face) she informed me she was ready to make the gender call. Here we go, in seconds I know I am going to hear her say "Girl"

"It looks like a little boy!" she proudly proclaimed. I just sat there wide eyed. Next thing I see her do is zoom in so close to the baby parts it's all a sea of grey, and she begins to circle the 'jewels.' I look over at my husband who is just as shocked as me (I'm not lying when I say we really thought this was a girl.) The technician wrapped up what she was doing, I'm smiling and in shock, and she tells me to wait for the doctor to come in to tell me what he thinks of the measurements.

I snap out of my shocked state and remember to be nervous over the health of the baby. The doctor comes in right away and informs me everything looks good, and to have a happy and healthy 4.5months. Back to gender shock.

We walked to the car and I kept saying, "we're having a little boy. we're having a son."
By the time we got to the car we couldn't even stop containing our excitement.

Since then we've tried in vain to come up with a name or two we like. That is proving problematic. Anyone have any boy names they want to share? (we're going for unique, but not 'moon beam' unique) Until we come up with a permanent name, we're calling him Axel Lee. This started after hearing that a couple from a TV Show we happen to love named their little baby boy this a few weeks ago. Also Lee is my husbands name. He is the opposite in appearance to what comes to mind when you say "Axel." It's a pretty fitting nickname for our little man until we come up with something more permanent. :)

Seriously, send me boy names!
We've got nothin'

Almost There

You may remember seeing the Scrappy Blanket.
But, I've neglected to show off the blanket that created all those balls of scrap yarn!

It's not done yet (just need to finish the edging), but here is a little preview of the Triple B or Baby's Big Blanket:

Aren't all those colors (20 to be exact) amazing! I am in love with this Big (GIANT) Blanket! Finished pictures to come very soon :)

Flickr Favorites - love

Last night it happened.
I dreamed about my baby. I dreamed she was in my arms. I dreamed her name, and sharing her with my extended family for the first time. I even dreamed about the mundane activity of changing her little diaper and her outfit. My mom told me this would happen, but I didn't believe her.

You see a few weeks ago I told her I was so anxious to find out what we were having. She simply replied, "Oh you'll know when you have the dream." I sort of laughed it off because that sounded sort of silly to me. But now that I 've had a dream about my baby, I feel like I know everything I was wondering about. Is it a boy? Is it a girl? What in the world will be name him/her? Last night instead of dreaming about something crazy and out of this world (baby books weren't lying when they said pregnant ladies have vivid and crazy dreams that are easy to remember) I dreamed all about my baby.

And I woke up with a smile on my face.
I can't wait to meet you little one.

Jumping The Gun

(dresser/future changing table)

Is 12.5 weeks too early to be doing any sort of nursery decorating?
I sort of couldn't help myself after my parents dropped off the dresser. We even attempted to buy a crib, but it was out of stock in the store AND online. It's going to take over 10 weeks to get so I suppose it was a good thing we attempted to get that early. Once it comes in I'll take more detailed photos of the room.

Things you can't see:
Beautiful handmade quilts made by my mom.
A little white table and rocking chair.
A standing lamp which is essentially a large version of the little yellow lamp on the dresser.
A super cute pillow from Olive, and a cute Long Dog (which was sewn up by my mom) from JuneCraft.

Yeah...I'm just a little excited about the arrival of this baby. : )

Flickr Favorites - Secrets, Revealed!

Can you guess my secret?
I mentioned something about it 3 or so Flickr Favorites ago.
And I thought it would be at least another 3 Flickr Favorites until I finally broke my silence. (I'm not very good at keeping secrets)

Well if it isn't obvious, my (growing) secret happens to be a tiny person working hard to meet the outside world in February. February 13th the doctors tell me. :)

I'm completely in love

Though only my closest online friends knew (thanks for listening to me all those months Mitsy) this baby was something that doctors suspected I might never have. It started at the very young age of 22.

Very newly married, my husband and I asked his doctors if his kidney disease would affect our ability to have children when we were ready for them. They suggested we meet with a genetic counselor, and if all went well to try sooner rather than later. No one could be sure if he would be okay after a transplant or not. The genetic counselor told us we were good to go, and we decided we would try right away rather than wait the 4 or so years we had planned on.

Next thing I knew I was 23 and confused.
We check the husband. He's fine. We check me. I'm fine.
And so begins the fertility treatments. 8 of them, covering pretty much every treatment you can have. 8 of them resulting in nothing.

Time practically flew by and I was 25 and taking my husband to the hospital on Christmas Eve to get his kidney transplant. Having no choice but to push thoughts of baby aside, I focused solely on helping him to get better.

Life had become a bit of a roller coaster ride and we decide to take a vacation to Ireland. It seemed like after everything we deserved a good get-a-away.

And while we were at it we decided to splurge on new bikes. For both of us. (cyclocross bikes, and they are awesome)

But let's not forget about the babies completely. Two months before leaving for Ireland we had the husband tested to see if he was okay post transplant. He most certainly was not. The kidney transplant left him completely sterile. Doctors told us it is most likely temporary, and happens after major surgeries. He was to be re-tested in July.

And on the day we came home from Ireland, I discovered we brought a tiny extra passenger with me. Completely by surprise, and completely naturally.

Did I mention I am in love?

9.5 weeks down, 30.5 weeks to go!
